Evolutionary Ecology of Aquatic Invertebrates

Dr. Dean McCurdy

Nova Scotia, CANADA

Mike Kopec (' 05) and Diana Lancaster (' 06) collecting mud shrimp on the shores of Nova Scotia, Canada. These samples are being used to explore the biology of intersexual amphipods, which exhibit characteristics of both males and females!

Mike Kopec (' 05) carefully extracts an amphipod from a sieve at the Blomidon mudflat, Nova Scotia, Canada. These amphipods will be used as part of Mike's Honors research project on the biology of microsporidian parasites (these parasites alter the sex of certain crustaceans).

Diana Lancaster (' 06) gets up early to collect crawling crustaceans on a mudflat in Nova Scotia, Canada. Diana will later stain her samples to identify parasites that infect amphipods.

Val White (' 05) attends a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) workshop in Middlebury, VT in July, 2004. As part of her College Honors research project, Val is developing a GIS database on invasive plant species at Albion College's Whitehouse Nature Center.
