Albion College Athletic Training Education Program

The Albion College Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education programs (CAATE) 2201 Double Creek Drive, Suite 5006, Round Rock, TX 78664. While receiving accreditation is a fine accomplishment it is our goal to continually refine the ATEP in order to get it to be the best it can be.

The Athletic Training Major embraces Albion College's Vision when theory and techniques presented in the classroom evolve into practical experience. Course requirements for the Athletic Training Major include:

Introduction to Psychology Athletic Injury: Prevention & Treatment
Human Gross Anatomy Athletic Injury Assessment
Anatomy and Kinesiology Therapeutic Rehab & Modalities I
Applied Human Physiology Advanced Techniques in Athletic Training
Exercise Physiology Athletic Training Administration
Measurement and Eval Medical Conditions
Clinical Labs Intro - IV Sports Nutrition
      First Aid/ CPR  Senior Seminar
       Athletic Training Colloquium

The newly renovated facilities within Albion College's sports complex support the course work of the Athletic Training Major. Students in the Athletic Training major obtain hands-on experience in the operation and prescribed uses of all rehabilitation equipment and therapeutic modalities.

A separate application is required for entry into the Athletic Training Program and it can be completed by students accepted into Albion College during their first semester. Upon successful completion of the accredited Athletic Training Education Program, students are eligible to take the Board of Certification (BOC) examination to become a certified Athletic Trainer.

Clinical Practice

Albion College is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and NCAA Division III. The Athletic Training Faculty and Staff provide practice and game coverage for the 18 intercollegiate athletic teams including:

Football Swimming and Diving (M/W)
Soccer (M/W) Track (M/W)
Cross Country (M/W) Tennis (M/W)
Volleyball (W) Baseball
Golf (M/W)  Softball
Basketball (M/W)

Athletic training students are able to obtain clinical observation hours and gain practical athletic training experience by assisting the certified athletic trainers in practice and event coverage. Practical experiences in athletic training may also be obtained in high schools, other colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, physician offices and with professional sports organizations. Some off campus travel is required. In addition, athletic training students may have opportunities for surgical observations, allied health care professional interactions, and applied research possibilities. The curriculum offers a valuable background for students interested in pursuing careers in other health professions, including but not limited to, human medicine (M.D., D.O.), physician assistant, and physical therapy.

Athletic Training Staff

The Albion College Athletic Training Staff have come together with a diverse background of experiences which will only serve to enhance the athletic training students. From the West Coast to the East Coast, NCAA Division I, III, clinic, high school and professional sports, the athletic training students will be exposed to a team approach of didactic and clinical education that integrates the best of what the staff and community medical professionals have to offer. With the addition of a partnership with Great Lakes Sports Medicine orthopedic practice we are excited about the interactions with physicians, physician assistants and other allied health care personnel. Each member is dedicated to teaching and working with undergraduates who are preparing to enter this exciting and challenging field.
