Services for Students with Disabilities
Albion College is committed to providing equal access and reasonable accommodations to students with disabilities as defined under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Albion College recognizes a student with a disability as anyone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The personalized approach to learning that is a hallmark of an Albion Education lends itself to supporting individual needs. The Learning Support Center coordinates the provision of accommodations for students with learning, physical and emotional disabilities. The Center also makes assistance available to students experiencing short-term illness or physical injury. Achieving reasonable effective accommodations for a student with a disability involves a shared responsibility between the student, faculty and staff. Ongoing communication between the student and the Learning Support Center staff is important to monitor accommodation effectiveness. A student's needs may vary between courses and between semesters. Some students may benefit from more intensive support during their first year but minimal services in later years. Other students may need support in courses in some areas but not others. Disability documentation is considered confidential information and does not become part of the student's academic record. Disability information is housed at the Learning Support Center. Access to records is restricted to center personnel. Prior authorization by the student is required for release of information. Temporary Disabilities from accidents or illness may occur during the year. Assistance is available through LSC including peer tutors, note-taking and help with access to classrooms.
