Philip J. Curtis is a Trustee of the Philip C. Curtis
Charitable Trust for the Encouragement of Art. He practices law in
Jackson, Michigan. Mr. Curtis is the nephew of Philip C. Curtis.
Janie Ellis is a Trustee of the Philip C. Curtis
Charitable Trust for the Encouragement of Art. She is active in the
arts in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Mark Hendrickson is a photographer and book artist who is
based in Scottsdale. Arizona.
Nancy Kitchell owns Kitchell Interior Design Associates in
Scottsdale, Arizona. She co-authored the Curtis catalogue raisonné,
Philip C. Curtis An Illustrated Catalogue of the Works, 1993.
Kimberly Joy Lloyd served as an assistant editor for the
Philip C. Curtis Sound and Silence catalogue. She first
encountered the work of Philip C. Curtis as a volunteer on the
Sound and Silence project. Kim holds a B.A. in Art History from
the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Anne Mills McCauley, M.F.A., is Professor of Art in the
Department of Art and art History at Albion College. She is a
printmaker, book artist and draftswoman. Anne is the artistic
designer of the catalogue.
Peter Mitchell, Ph.D. was president of Albion College from
1997 to 2007. He is a 1967 Albion graduate.
Rebecca Mitchell was first lady of Albion College from
1997 to 2007. Albion College awarded her an honorary doctorate of
humane letters in 2006.
Susan Rowe, M.F.A., is a graphic designer in the Albion
College Communications Office. She has a B.S. in Visual Design and
an M.F.A. in printmaking. While designing the catalogue, she became
very intrigued with Philip C. Curtis’ use of color and abstracted
imagery to describe a strong sense of place and spirit. His
non-verbal communication transcends words leaving the viewer steeped
in history, spirit, introspection, and thought.
Dave Trumpie is a photographer based in Lansing, Michigan.
Jim Whitehouse’s interest in art was stimulated when he
took Art 101 from Vernon Bobbitt in his final semester as a student
at Albion College in 1969. Returning to Albion in 1992 to work as a
fundraiser, James met Russell Babcock, ‘27, whose house was full of
the paintings and drawings of his friend Phil Curtis, ‘30. Through
his work at the college, James has had the opportunity of continuing
to be in close proximity to Curtis’ art. He met Philip Curtis on a
few occasions and cherishes the time spent with him.
Bille Wickre, Ph. D., is Associate Professor of Art
History and chair of the Department of Art and Art History at Albion
College. Her specialties are nineteenth and twentieth century art.
Rudy Aronoff, Albion College sophomore, served as a
research assistant to the Sound and Silence project during
the spring of 2007.
Mallory Rose Below is a senior at Albion College pursuing
a major in Psychology with minors in both Studio Art and Chemistry.
She began her research into Philip C. Curtis in the fall of 2006
with a focus on Curtis’ representation of children and childhood in
his work. The following spring, Mallory was an integral part of the
group which worked on layout and design for the Sound and Silence
catalogue.
Christina Borrelli graduated from Albion College in 2007
with majors in Political Science and German, as well as a minor in
Art History. Her study of Curtis focused on the ways in which
exposure to Picasso’s work while in New York influenced Curtis’
style. She co-authored “The New York Years.”
Jessica Joy Carden received a B.A. from Albion College in
the spring of 2007 with majors in Art History and Psychology and a
concentration in Human Services. Her first exposure to Philip C.
Curtis’ work in the fall of 2006 spurred an interest in the artist’s
repeated use of Jerome, Arizona, an area familiar to Jessica’s
family. The culmination of this research is her essay “Between Then
and Now,” which stresses the connections between Curtis’ art and the
town.
Claire Ann Christiansen graduated from Albion College in
the spring of 2007 with a B.A. in Studio Art and Anthropology. She
applied her experience and skill in the area of book design to the
development of the Sound and Silence catalogue.
Benjamin Chung Evans is a senior Art History major at
Albion College with additional interests in Political Science and
Public Policy. Benjamin was involved in the Curtis project from an
early stage and views Sound and Silence as a first step
towards increasing Curtis’ visibility within the American modern art
canon.
Nicole Kirsten Fritz is a senior Studio Art major at
Albion College whose concentrations include photography and video
art. In addition to her role as a photography assistant, Nicole
aided in the layout and design process of the Sound and Silence
catalogue.
Claire Marie Furness is a senior Art History and French
double-major at Albion College. As a member of the College’s
orchestra, Claire’s vested interest in music led her to study the
musical aspects of Curtis’ work. Her essay focuses on the importance
of instruments and musicians in Curtis’ oeuvre.
Hunter Green graduated from Albion College in 2007 with a
major in Studio Art. Hunter researched Curtis’ political activities
in New York in the 1930s, which was used in “The New York Years.”
Lillian Robin Hergott, an Albion College senior majoring
in Art History and English, co-authored “Song of the Past”, a
comprehensive look at the influence of Piero della Francesca on the
work of Philip C. Curtis.
Caroline Honour is a senior English major at Albion
College. Her interest in the ways in which Curtis pushed the
boundaries of reality and imagination led her to study the
organization of space and subject within his paintings. Her research
was used in the “Sound and Silence” essay.
Carolyn Jacques is a 2007 graduate of Albion College with
majors in Sociology and Music and a minor in Art History. Her
studies of Curtis’ work focused primarily on gender analysis. Her
research was used in “Personality and Paradox: The New Iconography
of Philip Curtis.”
David Knox graduated from Albion College in 2007 with a
degree in Studio Art. An Art History minor, David did extensive
research in the area of Curtis’ childhood in relation to the history
of the city of Jackson, Michigan. David contributed to the
Introductory essay.
Rachel Kowalski is a senior majoring in English and
Cultural Journalism at Albion College. Her research focused on the
impact that working in New York had on Curtis’ style in the 1930s.
She is a co-author of “The New York Years.”
Katie Lindow is an art student at Albion College. She
studied circuses and animals in Curtis’paintings after 1960.
Aaron Schmidt graduated from Albion College in 2007. Aaron
researched the WPA in the fall 2006 American Surrealism seminar.
Jennifer Taylor was a member of the American Surrealism
seminar in 2006. Her studies of horses and dogs in Curtis’ paintings
point toward a Biblical analysis of the works.
Shannon Thomas is a 2007 graduate of Albion College. She
has a BA in art history. Her research focus was the notion of
self-defining opposites in Curtis’ work, providing valuable
assistance in the “Sound and Silence” essay.
