Printmaking
The Printmaking Studio facilitates
the teaching of the traditional mediums of lithography, intaglio and
relief printing. Printing equipment includes a Brand litho press,
American French Tool and Brand etching presses, and three Vandercook
Universal #1 Proof Presses. A computer workstation is in place for those
students creating imagery for transference to plates as well as
multimedia applications. A diverse range of non-traditional approaches
to printed images are supported. Development of personalized imagery is
emphasized at all levels.
Courses
251 Printmaking I
Introduction to relief, intaglio and lithographic print processes.
Prerequisite: Art 121.
351 Printmaking II
Continuing study of relief, intaglio and lithographic print processes
with advanced applications. Development of personalized imagery
emphasized. Prerequisite: Art 251.
352 Printmaking III
Advanced problems in relief, intaglio and lithography with emphasis on
integration of print processes and development of personalized imagery.
Prerequisite: Art 351.
353 Printmaking Workshop
Workshops provided for concentrated development in all phases of
printmaking. Discussion of traditional and contemporary printmaking in
relation to individual problems. Development of concept is strongly
emphasized. Prerequisite: Art 352.
354 Printmaking Workshop II
Continuation of Art 353. Prerequisite: Art 353.
355 Printmaking Workshop III
Continuation of Art 354. Prerequisite: Art 354.
356 Visual Poetry
Combines the creation of poetry with presentation in printed form.
Intended for writers and visual artists alike, this course teaches the
fundamentals of writing poetry and letterpress printing. Using movable
type and hand-operated printing presses, participants will write, set
and print their own broadsides and artists' books. Same as English 356.
357 Book Arts
Designed to teach students the traditional and contemporary craft of
handmade visual books. Students investigate book forms through hands-on
demonstrations to gain experience in a wide range of book structures as
preparation for individual creations. Exploration of a diverse range of
media in the construction of individual books is encouraged and
supported. Prerequisite: Art 121 and one other studio art course.
