Marking Time: Douglas Goering Retrospective

Emeritus professor Doug Goering self portraitRepresenting work from 45 years of art-making, this exhibit features pieces, primarily abstract paintings, which address aspects of visual perception. In many cases, viewers will see the same idea revisited several times, providing a line of continuity. Visitors to the show will find their own experiences inform their viewing and interpretation, and Goering notes, “Their responses will surely approximate my intentions.”

The title of the exhibit “Marking Time” alludes to Professor Goering’s career as an artist but also can be interpreted quite literally. The “marks” or brush strokes that comprise his paintings represent time spent in art making and also themes that he has explored at different times.

Pulse (2000) by Doug GoeringThe work demonstrates the importance of the precision of these brush strokes in creating an overall visual effect. Some pieces within the collection contain dollops of color that are large and bold and others may be made up of brush strokes that are no larger than a grain of rice. All of Goering’s work is marked by a high degree of intentionality in terms of the subject and how the desired visual effect is to be achieved.

This exhibition includes oils and watercolors as well as gouache and encaustic paintings.
