Abbott 70th Anniversary

Miriam Langley, '35, in her senior year at Albion.

Warren Abbott, '35, in his senior year at Albion.

On September 6, 1936 Miriam Langley and Warren Abbott were married in Dayton, Ohio and then moved to Midland, MI which became their hometown until about 1970. They met as freshmen at Albion College and both graduated from Albion in 1935. Following graduation, Warren went on to get a master's degree from Nothwestern University in Chicago. His first job was at Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI.

During the next 33 years, Miriam and Warren raised 5 children. The first two, David and B.J., also followed in their parent's footsteps and graduated from Albion college in 1962 and 1964 respectively. Kenneth served in the US Air Force after high school and Thomas and John graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, WI and Western State in Gunnison, CO respectively. One grandchild, Heather Schweitzer, graduated as a 4th generation Albion College graduate in May of 2005 with 3 generations in attendance. (Warren's mother was the first generation grad.)

During the 33 years in Midland, Warren was active in the Dow Male Chorus, a Barber Shop Quartet and SPEBSQSA. He was a member of the choir at Memorial Presbyterian Church and Our Savior Lutheran Church where he was also the choir director. He was active in the town musicals , the county Republican Party, the School Board, Dale Carnegie, Boy Scouts, and the Exchange Club. During the war, he had a Victory Bike and a Victory Garden. He was also an Elder at Memorial Presbyterian Church where his son David was ordained into the ministry in 1969.

Miriam raised the 5 children, was active in PTA, an assistant Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and also assisted with Brownies and Girl Scouts. She did volunteer work at Midland Hospital, and drove the elderly around from the Kings Daughter's Home. For fun she was in AAUW and a Reading for Fun group, PEO, and played bridge whenever asked.

During the school year 1959-1960, the family added a German exchange student, Heidi Goetz to the family. Family vacations were taken every year. The children were able to see first hand much of historic America. By attending the Kiwanis and Audubon lectures given each year, the family had many wonderful experiences.

At age 55, Dow decided they didn't need this particular Sr. Economic Evaluating Technical Expert any more and Warren moved on to Ft Wayne, IN to become a professor at the Purdue University extension. There he taught graduate students how to do what he had done for 33 years. Miriam became active in University Wives and they were instrumental in starting Beautiful Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ft. Wayne. Besides being on the ground floor of its establishment, Warren was also choir director and church treasurer for many years. He often helped out in the teaching of math at the little school the church began.

Ft. Wayne has been home since 1970 when the Midland home was sold, and now the two have lived at Arbor Glen, a beautiful retirement complex, since it was built in 1996.

Celebrating with the 93 year old Abbotts will be their 5 children, at least 6 of the 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons. These family members will come from Hawaii, California, Florida and Michigan. After lunch at one of their favorite local steak houses, the family will return to Arbor Glen and watch some of the home movies Warren made beginning in 1940.

A 70th Anniversary is not really that common these days. They feel fortunate they are in fairly good health, still have keen minds, can see well and appreciate that they still have each other.

If interested in sending a card to them, here is their address:
