1989 Class Notes

Mark Abbott, ’89, earned a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh in April 2008. His dissertation was on Russian entrepreneurs and the impact of informal business networks on their enterprises. Mark is currently serving as senior advisor to the COO at the Corporation for National and Community Service in Washington, D.C., which administers the AmeriCorps program. Bonnie Harris Bem, ’89, is a stay-at-home mom. She is the director of Vacation Bible School for her church. She also plays the flute with the South Oakland Community Band. Bonnie and her husband, David, have been married for 11 years. They have two children and live in Royal Oak.

Charlie Drier, ’89, has worked for Auto-Owners Insurance Co. for 18 years. He is the regional vice president, serving independent insurance agencies in Illinois. John Fuelling, ’89, and his brother, William, just opened a gourmet butcher shop/wine shop, The Corner Butcher Shop, located in La Verne, CA, where he lives.

Dwayne Kraft, ’89, has recently become the senior director for regional government affairs with Diageo, PLC, a leading alcohol beverage manufacturer that has its North American headquarters in Norwalk, CT. He and his wife, Stacy, and daughter moved from Milwaukee, WI, to Connecticut in June. He has reconnected with friend and fellow classmate, Dan Greden, ’89, who lives in West Hartford, CT.

Lynne March, ’89, ran in the 112th Boston Marathon with a finishing time of 3:54:48. She lives in San Diego, CA.

Lisa Sherman, ’89, was recently promoted to the position of assistant general counsel for Compass Group USA Inc., where she has worked for nine years. She has been a practicing attorney in North and South Carolina for 15 years. Lisa’s practice area is employment law with a focus on employment discrimination and affirmative action. She and her husband, Tony England, live in Tega Cay, SC.

Mark Stuart, ’89, was recently elected president of the Foundation for the Zoological Society of San Diego. In this role, he leads a group of volunteers dedicated to reaching the Zoo’s philanthropic goals. The Zoological Society is in the planning stage for a $250 million fund-raising campaign. Jason Waechter, ’89, is a lawyer and sole owner of a three-attorney law firm in Southfield. The firm handles vehicle-related accidents and all of the no-fault claims and litigation that arise from them. With some business partners, Jason recently opened the biggest mixed martial arts (cage fighting) gym in Michigan (www.mashgym.com). He and his wife, Holly, have two children.
