Joseph Serra, ’56, will travel to India this summer to evaluate rehabilitation centers for children with paralytic polio. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative in which he is involved is in its 20th year, and today reports there are only four countries where the virus is pandemic, with less than 2,000 cases of paralysis in the past year. When the group was founded in 1988, there were more than 350,000 cases of paralysis in 125 countries. The partners in the coalition are the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Rotary International. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last fall as part of a wilderness medicine course. He and his wife, Dorothy McEvoy Serra, ’59, have a new family member, also named Joe Serra. They live in Stockton, CA.
