1998 Class Notes

Christine Braun-Hammelman, ’98, 3591 W. 400 N, McCordsville, IN 46055, is a veterinarian at Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly & Co. She provides veterinary support for animal drug development. She previously worked for over three years as a small-animal veterinarian. Christine earned her D.V.M. from Michigan State University in 2004. She and her husband, Jason, were married in 2005.

Angela Bennander, ’98, 415 W. Fullerton Parkway #1105, Chicago, IL 60614, has been the vice president of the Res Publica Group, a public relations and public affairs firm, since 2007. She previously worked for eight years on Capitol Hill, in the offices of Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin and Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow. She traveled to Belize in 2008.

Sally Goff Brummel, ’98, 401 Sibley St. Apt. 833, St. Paul, MN 55101, is an education outreach coordinator for the Minnesota Planetarium Society. She travels the state in a portable ExploraDome, taking audiences on tours of the stars. Sally is also working on a project to build a new planetarium in Minneapolis. She previously worked in the planetarium of the Maryland Science Center from 2000 to 2006, producing and presenting shows. She has traveled to New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, and Spain. Sally and her husband, Max, were married in 2007.

Colleen Grifka Buda, ’98, 5325 Mystic Lake Dr., Brighton, MI 48116, is a physician assistant in general surgery for University of Michigan Health System. She earned her master’s degree in 2002. She has traveled to Hawaii, Mexico, the Grand Canyon, and Italy. She has also taken an Alaskan cruise. Colleen and her husband, Brian, were married in 2004.

Kathy Defever Drozd, ’98, 26172 Westmeath, Farmington Hills, MI 48334, is a clinical research associate for Sanofi-Aventis, a pharmaceutical company. She sang in numerous community choirs and volunteered with the American Heart Association. She lived in Salzburg, Austria, while in graduate school. Kathy earned her master’s degree in German from Bowling Green State University in 2001. She and her husband, Don, were married in 2007. They spent their honeymoon in Germany and Italy.

Susan Cunningham Dwyer, ’98, 81 Cazneau Ave., Sausalito, CA 94965, is the managing director and producer for Dwyer Productions, a television production company she started with her husband, Mark, in 2005. He is the executive producer and creative director. Susan has shot commercials in London, Madrid, and Rome. She has also traveled to Italy, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Susan and Mark were married in 2006. She has two step-children.

Nicole Hoagland Emens, ’98, Los Altos, CA, is a stay-at-home mom. She worked at Rinet Co. in Boston, MA, from 1999 to 2000 and at Boston Private Bank and Trust Co. from 2000 to 2005. Nicole has traveled to London, Hawaii, the Canadian Rockies, Cancun, and the Caribbean. She and her husband, Robert, were married in 2005. They have two children.

Karen McBarnes Frye, ’98, 4367 Halbert Rd., Battle Creek, MI 49017, is a teacher with Battle Creek Public Schools. She is married to Earl.

Amanda Gilman, ’98, 5738 N. Sunset Lane, Glendale, WI 53209, is a chemistry teacher at Menomonee Falls High School.

Julie Woodruff Gronevelt, ’98, 3440 Clear View Dr., Holland, MI 49424, is a registered nurse. She and her husband, Mark, have two daughters.

Rachel Welch Haas, ’98, 18105 Township Road 160, Mt. Blanchard, OH 45867, has taught English for 10 years at Findlay High School. She was a Golden Apple Award nominee in 2006 and 2007. Rachel was a member of Mt. Blanchard Village Council for five years, including council president. She was a founding committee member of the Mt. Blanchard Pumpkin Festival and the Mt. Blanchard Pumpkin 5K. Rachel earned her master’s degree in education from University of Findlay in 2006. She and her husband, Daniel, were married in 1998. They have two children.

Alison Hass, ’98, 190 18th St., Brooklyn, NY 11215, works for the New York City Department of Education. She is a fifth grade teacher at The Children’s School, New York City’s only full-inclusion public school. Alison was part of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project Study Group to create assessment tools for New York City schools. She was also a part of the NYC ELA Scope and Sequence Committee. She earned her master’s degree from Teachers College at Columbia University.

Andrea Okkerse Hays, ’98, 659 Beech St., Columbus, OH 43206, is a speech language pathologist for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She earned her master’s degree in communicative disorders and deaf studies from California State University at Fresno in 2003. Andrea and her husband, John, were married in 2008.

Tina Hervey, ’98, is the new communications director for the Missouri Republican Party. She has spent the last 10 years working in Washington, D.C., most recently at the U.S. Department of Education as deputy director of regional services. She also worked for former Attorney General John Ashcroft at the Ashcroft Group LLC, where she traveled with Ashcroft on his book tour and served as primary media contact. Tina also worked in the Office of the Press Secretary and Office of Public Liaison at the White House. She began her career in Washington working for Senator Sam Brownback. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in political management at George Washington University. Tina lives in St. Louis, MO.

Jennifer Taylor Howe, ’98, 22321 Blackburn St., Saint Clair Shores, MI 48080, teaches German at Lake Orion High School. She is involved with St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She completed her master’s degree in language learning at Wayne State University in 2004. Jennifer and her husband, Michael, traveled to Jamaica in 2005 for their first anniversary. They have a daughter.

Jennifer Jacobs, ’98, 42935 Northville Place Dr., Apt. 1513, Northville, MI 48167, works as an emissions regulatory engineer for the Ford Motor Co. Jennifer earned her master’s degree in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry.

Colleen Manning Kim, ’98, 7904 Briarbrook Dr., Ypsilanti, MI 48197, is a dry cleaner. She and her husband volunteer with Cub Scout Pack 249 and have won several awards in scouting. Colleen and her husband, Don, have been married 10 years and have a son.

Marcus LaPratt, ’98, 3337 Culver Ave., Dearborn, MI 48124, is a musician and executive director for Singers of United Lands (SOUL). He has had various jobs as a singer, performer, music director, and manager. Marcus has traveled to Europe and Indonesia. He is a Guinness World Record Holder for the “Longest Singing Marathon by an Individual,” singing for 75 hours straight in 2007. He and his wife, Sylvia, were married in 2006.

Melanie Gamble McNeese, ’98, 3526 Dennis St., Houston, TX 77004, is a Ph.D. candidate in epidemiology at The University of Texas School of Public Health. She earned a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Michigan. Melanie and her husband, Marvin McNeese Jr., ’95, were married in 2003. They have a son.

Heather Gavord Notter, ’98, 213 S. Charles St., Saginaw, MI 48602, is an outpatient therapist in psychotherapy for List Psychological Services. Heather earned her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Michigan State University in 2000. She is married to Bradley.

Christine O’Neill, ’98, 1019 S. Lincoln, Hancock, MI 49930, is the assistant dean for the Suomi College of Arts and Sciences at Finlandia University. She earned her Ph.D. in sociology from Colorado State University in 2005.

Lori Baughman Palmer, ’98, 43032 Emerson Way, Novi, MI 48377, is an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. She previously worked as a clerk for then-Chief Justice Maura D. Corrigan at the Michigan Supreme Court. Lori served as second-chair on a case with her father, Timothy Baughman, ’71, before the U.S. Supreme Court. They won their case, Hudson v. Michigan. They believe they may be the first father/daughter team to appear before the court. She and her husband, Erin, have three daughters.

Todd Rutledge, ’98, is a lawyer. He became a member of The Order of Barristers in 2001, the year earned his J.D.

Christian Sanders, ’98, 3121 Kingsley Dr., Troy, MI 48084, works in finance as a senior financial analyst for ArvinMeritor Automotive, where he has worked for over a year. He previously worked at Comcast Cable for five years. He earned his M.B.A. from Walsh College in 2006.

Nina Sanchez Schroeder, ’98, Wheaton, IL, is a choral director at St. Francis High School. She earned her master’s degree in education from National-Louis University. Nina and her husband, Jon, have three children.

Melora Haas Shelton, ’98, 2108 9th St. SW, Puyallup, WA 98371, has worked for six years as a biologist with Grette Associates Environmental Consultants in Tacoma, WA. She specializes in environmental permitting, including Endangered Species Act consultation for major public and private aquatic projects. Melora earned her master’s degree in aquatic and fishery sciences from the University of Washington. She and her husband, Eric, have traveled to Chile, Argentina, Mexico, and British Columbia. They live in a home designed and built by Eric. They were married in 2005 and have a daughter.

H. Douglas Shepherd IV, ’98, 8224 Maple Leaf Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684, is an attorney and associate with Brandt, Fisher, Alward & Roy P.C. He and his wife, Mary Ann Staib Shepherd, ’99, have two children.

Nicole Ciaramitaro Singleton, ’98, 2 Dorset Court, Hawthorn Woods, IL 60047, works in sales as a senior account executive for Experian, where she has worked for eight years. Nicole was the top salesperson in her division in 2008. She has received several 100% Club and President’s Club awards while at Experian. She and her husband, Kurt, have been married for six years and have a son.

Brent Stine, ’98, 2395 Sunnyknoll, Berkley, MI 48072, is a corporate controller for Peterson American Corp. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children.

Melissa Hall Verb, ’98, 7836 Lugabill Rd., Bluffton, OH 45817, is an academic administrator and assistant to the dean at Ohio Northern University. She has traveled to Alaska and Hawaii. Melissa and her husband, Bob, have a son.

Zachary Weller, ’98, works with the U.S. Department of Justice.
