International Student Services
One of the most compelling reasons why students have chosen Albion College is the immediate and practical assistance available on campus. At Albion, a variety of services are offered to assist you in anyway we can. International Orientation You have come a long way from home to study in the United States and this could be a challenging experience for some international students. Some of you might find it uneasy at first to get acquainted to American customs, life style, academic environment, or even the food. We understand that many things could be different where you come from, and that is why our International Orientation is especially designed in such a way that you will have a smooth transition from home to Albion College. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be picked up by International SOAR Leaders and the Director of International Education Lynn Del-Cid-Neddo. Accommodation has been arranged in advance so that you will be escorted to your room the night you come to Albion. Your resident hall assistant will make sure you are set for a good night sleep and will be available to help you when needed. International Orientation is organized by the Center for International Education. First year international students will be assisted to set up their bank accounts if necessary, apply for Social Security cards, go shopping, etc. Students will get acquainted to both Albion campus and Albion city during International Orientation as well. Lynn Del-cid Neddo and invited speakers will give sessions on cultural shock and how to get involved on campus. Degree-seeking international students will join the first fun and exciting experience that is designed for every Albion student: SOAR-- Student Orientation And Registration. Among other fun, advising is available to help students register for classes. After the orientation, even when you have become a senior knowing everything around, we will still be around as well to help you with anything you might need. Advising and Counseling At Albion College, each student has at least four advisors: student and faculty first year mentors, an academic advisor, and a resident hall assistant. Additionally, each international has International Faculty and Peer Advisors who are available for him/her to make Albion a real home from home. So whether it's academic, social, or personal, you will never be left alone without help. Counseling Office provides all students with confidential counseling and crisis intervention related to a variety of life issues. Experienced counselors are available to help students with interpersonal relationships, dating issues, family concerns, stress management, sexuality, eating concerns, depression and loss and grief, etc. The Counseling Services staff can also provide students with referrals to community mental health agencies. Health Care Albion College Health Center is open to serve all students, international and domestic alike. Student Health Services provides complete outpatient health care, with appropriate referrals to specialists as needed. Visits to Student Health Services and with the college physicians are free. Occasionally there is a small charge for supplies or medication. Full laboratory testing and x-ray is available in cooperation with Oaklawn Hospital. Host Family Intercultural Affairs pairs students with families from the city of Albion. There are events organized by Intercultural Affairs to get students and their host families together, and students and their host families spend time on their own as well. This program promotes students' entry to Albion community as participating members as well as helps students to feel like they have a home away from home. Employment Opportunities Campus employment is available to help students meet expenses. Earnings from student employment are paid directly to the student by payroll check each month; the amount earned is not credited to the student's account. The Student Employment Office has a listing of on- and off-campus jobs that are available for everyone. This listing includes job descriptions, qualifications needed and rate of pay. Besides this service from Student Employment Office, students are also provided assistance to seek internships and OPT jobs by the Director of Center for International Education and/or other staff/faculty with expertise in the fields. The dollar amount students make by working on and off campus vary, depending on what kind of job you get and how many hours you work per week. On-campus jobs can usually pay you anywhere between $6.95/hour to $9.00/hour. During the academic year, full-time students are allowed to work up to 20 hours/week; but when school is not in session, you can obtain off-campus jobs and work full-time. Again, salaries for different off-campus jobs vary. Transportation Students without vehicles on campus have many options thanks to services provided by Campus Safety. Campus Safety provides transportation to and from medical appointments and for non-emergency medical concerns, transportation to and from class and to cafeteria Baldwin for injured students, transportation to local retail outlets in town several times a week, and shuttle to shopping malls, grocery, and department stores in Jackson once a week. All of these services are free to all Albion College students. During scheduled breaks, shuttle service is available for a minimum fee to and from airports in Michigan.
