High School Honor Band Audition Guidelines

Each musician applying to participate in the Albion College High School Honor Band must upload an audio file audition (.wav, .mp3, .mp4 are preferred). Audio files should be between 5 and 6 minutes in length – no longer. In addition, audio files must be labeled with your name to insure it is properly attributed. (i.e.: JaneDoe.wav or Doe-John.mp3)

Woodwind and Brass

(All items listed are required)

  1. 3 Scales – must be played as complete scales, ascending and descending; as many octaves as you can play with the best tone quality; tempo, evenness, and accuracy will all be considered:
    1. Concert E-flat
    2. Concert C
    3. Chromatic (from lowest to highest note you can play with good tone quality)
  2. 2 Contrasting Excerpts – one technical and one lyrical; can be solos, etudes, studies, etc.; can come from the same piece; criteria used in solo and ensemble will be considered.

Percussion

(Two out of three listed are required. Your choice.)

  1. Snare drum – one technical study, etude, or solo that demonstrates multiple rhythmic and sticking techniques; criteria used in solo and ensemble will be considered.
  2. Timpani - one technical study, etude, or solo that demonstrates multiple rhythmic and sticking techniques; criteria used in solo and ensemble will be considered.
  3. Mallets - one technical study, etude, or solo; should demonstrate both technical and lyrical playing; criteria used in solo and ensemble will be considered.
