McLean: Ford Showed 'Government Can Indeed Work'
August 5, 2014
"After 40 years, it is my view that Michiganders of all political stripes have begun to recognize Gerald Ford as a fine president and a great American," writes Patrick McLean, director of Albion College's Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service, in a commentary for Bridge, an online magazine produced by The Center for Michigan.
Saturday, August 9, will mark four decades since Ford was sworn in as the 38th president (and the only one from Michigan) following Richard Nixon's resignation in the wake of the Watergate scandal. "[Ford] has over that time become almost apolitical, with Democrats and Republicans alike expressing pride in his legacy," McLean writes. "Gerald Ford, through his words and his deeds, taught us that our constitution and our government can indeed work."
