Alongside co-hosts from Adrian College, the Briton stock seat team welcomed seven other IHSA teams from the Michigan region to the Held Equestrian Center on October 16 to compete in Albion’s first home meet since the renovation of the Randi C. Heathman Indoor Arena. At the end of the day, strong performances across the board allowed the Briton riders to finish as reserve champions in the second half of the Sunday double-header.
Leading the way was sophomore Phillip Voglewede (Oxford, IN/Benton Central), who qualified for IHSA Regionals with a win at Intermediate level, followed closely by classmate Tegan Barclay (Norton Shores/Muskegon Catholic Central), who punched her ticket to Regionals at Intermediate II.
The Open-level Briton riders faced steep competition in horsemanship and reining, with sophomore Molly Brueggeman (Vero Beach, FL/Indian River) snagging a fourth place finish in the morning reining class followed by a third in the afternoon and a second by senior team co-captain Allison Voorhess (Mount Clemens/Lutheran North) in horsemanship.
Junior Danielle Townsend (Springport/Springport) boosted Albion’s score with a win in Advanced horsemanship and sophomore Shannon Ervin (Ortonville/Brandon) won her section of Novice en route to the Britons’ afternoon reserve championship. Their victories were further supported by second place finishes by Jourdan Tonti (Livonia/Churchill) and Rebekah Barthel (Freeland/Freeland) in Novice and first-year student Sydney Walker (Chesterfield/L’Anse Creuse High North) in walk-trot.
