Subjects: Language and Japanese Area Studies.
Prerequisites: 3.0 GPA, junior-level standing; demonstrated maturity. Acceptance in the program is conditional on completion of at least one semester or term of Japanese prior to departure.
Length: Academic year plus summer (11 months).
Credit: General 8.0 units for one year on the program. Spring Semester starting in 2011.
Faculty: Classes are taught by both Waseda professors and visiting faculty members, including the Japan Study Resident Director.
Housing: With families in Tokyo.
Cost: Albion College comprehensive fees cover orientation session, Waseda University tuition, room, partial board (breakfast and dinner with the host family), commuting expenses in Tokyo, the cultural practicum and administrative costs. The Japanese government has a scholarship program to make study in Japan feasible for exchange students. If the program costs are more than Albion, the student will be billed for the difference.
Costs not covered by Albion: Students are responsible for lunches in Tokyo, personal expenses, books, and travel to and from the orientation site. Recent participants have budgeted $400-$500 per month for lunches, books, transportation in Tokyo, travel, and personal expenses.

Comments: Students are required to study Japanese each term at Waseda. Electives may be chosen from the courses offered at the International Division, Waseda University. Courses are taught in English at Waseda. For three weeks in the Spring the Japan Study program moves to rural Shimane Prefecture to encounter more "traditional" Japanese life.
