Chinese University of Hong Kong - International Asian Studies Program
Subjects: Mandarin and Cantonese, plus a full curriculum.
Prerequisites: Minimum 3.0 GPA, junior-level standing, demonstrated maturity, no prior study of Chinese language or area studies is required. Applicants should demonstrate a sincere desire to increase their understanding of Chinese culture and possess the curiosity and versatility to adapt to a foreign environment.
Length: Academic year is encouraged; however, one-semester stays are possible.
Credit: Students must take a normal course load of 12-18 credit hours per semester. (4 semester hours = 1 Albion College unit).
Housing: University housing for foreign students with Chinese roommates. Dormitories here impose closing hours and visitor's regulations which must be observed.
Costs not covered by Albion: Travel to and from Hong Kong; local transportation; text books; laundry; air conditioning charge, entertainment; miscellaneous personal needs; meals; travel; security deposit.
Comments: The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the host campus for the International Asian Studies program. Admission for both Chinese students and for American students on this program is competitive. A well-prepared application dossier is recommended. The Yale-China Association cosponsors the International Asian Studies Program and functions as its North American representative. Courses are taught in English. Courses taught in Mandarin or Cantonese are only open to those with the requisite language facility.
