The British Eighth - 2008
What can we say about the British Eighth that hasn't already been said? We're good - we have a great time on the rehearsal field, on the performance field, and especially in the stands! We love our team and we love Albion College!
This year's drum majors were Lizzy Thornton ('09) and Becky Bayer ('10) and our Color Guard Captain was Megan Hinz. The spirit leader was Brandon Veremis ('10). We had two superb student drill writers this year in Kelly Gentry ('10) and Breanna Reedy ('10). Half-time shows this season included a "Wedding Show" featuring the British Eighth as the reception band, and "Heros and Villians" including music from Indiana Jones, Batman, and Star Wars.
The Albion College Music Department is housed in Goodrich Chapel. The main floor is an auditorium with seating for 1,600. In the lower level are high-tech classrooms, faculty and administrative offices, rehearsal rooms, and practice rooms. A few faculty offices are in the bell tower also.
Director: Dr. Samuel McIlhagga
The Albion College Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Samuel McIlhagga, is a 70-member ensemble comprising complements of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Each spring the Symphonic Band performs two to three concerts in Albion College's historic Goodrich Chapel that feature music from the 16th to the 21st centuries. Recent performances have included such works as David Del Tredici's "Acrostic Song" from Final Alice, John Mackey's Hymn to a Blue Hour, John Williams/Donald Hunsberger's Star Wars Trilogy, Percy Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, Eric Whitacre's Noisy Wheels of Joy, as well as chamber works by Dukas, Gabrieli, Gounod, Mendelssohn, Persichetti, and Jacobs.
In 2008 the Symphonic Band traveled to New York City to both take in the sites and perform in the world-renowned Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. The band has also shared concerts with area high schools including Springport and DeWitt, as well as Olivet College's Wind Ensemble.
The Symphonic Band is open to all students regardless of major (75-80% of the ensemble is made up of non-music majors). Auditions are traditionally held toward the end of the fall semester and are designed for chair placement.
