Born in Nara, Japan, Takeshi Abo earned a bachelor’s degree at Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan, and continued his study at Michigan State University in 1995. He earned both master’s and the doctoral degrees at MSU. Dr. Abo is Concertmaster of the Alma, Battle Creek, and Midland Symphony Orchestras. He has also played as Concertmaster with a number of orchestras throughout Michigan. An active violinist, Abo has given recitals and concerto performances inJapan, theUnited Kingdom, and theUnited States.
Dr. Abo has been on the faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He also served as assistant professor of violin/viola atCentralMichiganUniversity. Currently, he is on the faculty atAlmaCollegeandAlbionCollege.
His primary teachers include Robert Dan, Joseph Fuchs, and Misako Kameda.
Clarinet and Saxophone
Wesley Warnhoff is an American clarinetist currently serving on the faculty of Albion College and Alma College. Along with these two teaching posts Wesley is also the principal clarinetist with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, an orchestra that he has been a member of since 2010. Wesley is also an avid soloist and chamber musician having won multiple concerto competitions and continually performing solo recitals throughout the United States.
Wesley earned his Bachelors in Clarinet Performance from Missouri State University and his Masters in Clarinet Performance from Michigan State University. He is currently working on his DMA at Michigan State in conjunction with his teaching and performance career. His principal teachers include Dr. Jack Scheurer, Dr. Allison Storochuk, and Dr. Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr.
Wesley is currently living in Lansing, Michigan with his wife Stephanie where he maintains an active studio of young talented students on top of his other responsibilities.
Karen TenBrink became the director of the Albion College Women’s Chorus in 2007. She has Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the University of Michigan, respectively. She has worked with choirs in various capacities: founder of a children’s choir in Japan, associate conductor of the Ann Arbor Boychoir, choir teacher at middle and high schools in Woodhaven and Novi, choirmaster for the Bangkok Opera in Thailand, and as associate conductor of the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor.
She maintains a private voice and piano studio and performs regularly as a choral and solo singer. She lives in Jackson with her husband and two children.
John King has been a member of the voice faculty at Albion since 2007 and director of the opera workshop since 2001. He holds a MM degree in voice/pedagogy from the University of Colorado. He has performed in US and Canada in Operas, Musicals and Concerts. He has also performed on Canadian Television and is a professional voice-over person for a number of companies and also on-air TV advertising. He taught public schools for over 30 years (mostly here in Albion) and is the president of Albion Community Theatre. His Musical and straight theatre background includes over one hundred roles and a similar number of directorial jobs. John performed with Robert Shaw in Brahms’s German Requiem for the inaugural concert at Carnegie Hall.
