Gregory Eastwood, ’62, Receives Case Western University Medal
Thursday, June 7, 2007

Reported by Jake Weber

ALBION, Mich. — The Case Western Reserve University Board of Trustees has honored Gregory Eastwood, ’62, with its highest honor, the University Medal. Eastwood, a Case Western alumnus, served as Case Western’s interim president for the 2006-07 school year.

Case Western has awarded only 22 University Medals since the board established the award in 1971. Eastwood received the medal earlier this month, and is the first recipient of the medal since 2003.

Eastwood had originally planned to spend the 2006-07 academic year on sabbatical from his position as president of SUNY Upstate Medical University. Instead, he resigned from the Case Western board of trustees in order to take the interim presidency. Eastwood is an alumnus of Case Western’s medical school and his wife Lynn, a 1964 graduate of Albion, earned a master’s degree at Case Western.

During his tenure as interim president, Eastwood improved communication between university administration and students, faculty, staff and alumni, and in so doing, instilled improved confidence and stability in the university. Eastwood also commissioned a study and appointed a task group to address the university’s logo, and on June 2, 2007, the Board of Trustees approved the group’s recommendation of a new design.

“Lynn and I have enjoyed our [presidential] experience and the tremendous support from the university community,” Eastwood said when receiving the Medal. “It is an honor to have served my alma mater, and I am encouraged by the positive changes in and direction of Case Western Reserve University.”

With his interim presidency over, Eastwood has elected to serve in another capacity at Case Western. Beginning July 1, he will take the directorship of the university’s Inamori International Center for Ethics and Excellence.

Case Western’s University Medal is awarded in recognition of leadership, dedication and service to the university, to higher education and to society. The solid silver medal bears the university seal on one side, while the reverse cites the recipient's name and the date the medal was awarded. A committee of university faculty, trustees and select medal recipients recommend new honorees.
