ALBION, Mich. – Albion College Trustee Robert M. Teeter, ’61, passed away Sunday, June 13, at his home in Ann Arbor, following a battle with cancer.

“Robert Teeter represented the best of the liberal arts tradition, both in terms of using one’s education to achieve success, and in terms of dedicating one’s life to civic engagement and moral leadership,” remarked Albion College President Peter Mitchell during Albion College’s commencement ceremonies, held in early May. Teeter was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters at commencement for his professional achievements and service to the College.

This past spring, the College also established the Robert M. Teeter Student Research Fellowship in the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Public Policy and Service. This endowed fellowship will underwrite public policy research, and is intended to provide Ford students with the opportunity to do more extensive and complex research than can be done in the context of a class or internship.

A pioneer in the development and practice of modern public opinion research, Teeter worked closely with many influential business and political leaders.

As an executive with Market Opinion Research, Teeter served in a senior position in the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, and served as the national campaign chairman for President George H. W. Bush in 1992.

Throughout his illness, Teeter continued to serve as president of Coldwater Corporation, a consulting and research firm which conducts polling for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal.

Teeter was a member of the boards of directors for UPS, Visteon Corporation, Kaydon Corporation and the Bank of Ann Arbor, as well as the University of Michigan Business School’s William Davidson Institute and the Fair Lane Learning Institute. He also served as a member of the grant screening committee at the Gerald R. Ford Library in Grand Rapids, and on the executive committee of the Albion College Board of Trustees.

Teeter is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Carter Teeter, '63, children Katherine C. Teeter and John W. Teeter, and brothers, Philip W. Teeter and John H. Teeter, '67. Teeter's late father, Howard M. Teeter, was a 1929 graduate of Albion College.

Visitation is Thursday, June 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Muehlig's Funeral Home, 403 S. 4th Street, in Ann Arbor (734-663-3375). The memorial service will be held Friday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1432 Washtenaw Ave., in Ann Arbor (734-662-4466).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Robert M. Teeter Student Research Fellowship at the Ford Institute, Albion College, 611 E. Porter Street, Albion, Mich. 49224. For more information, contact the Albion College President's Office at 517-629-0210.
