       Poetry Fest Promises Surprises
LIBRARY EVENT CALLS ALL POETS TO PARTICIPATE

Monday, April 7, 2003

ALBION, Mich. –   A poetic free-for-all is in store for the audience and participants in the fourth annual Albion College Poetry Fest, to be held Tuesday April 15 at 3 p.m. in the Wendell B. Will Room of Albion College’s Stockwell Library.

This year’s Poetry Fest, says library serials assistant Marion Meilaender, organizer of the event, relies on the audience to supply the program.  “There is no pre-arranged program of speakers or pieces; audience members are free to come forward and read one or two relatively brief poems, whether those are their own work or the work of other poets.  In the past, participants have always been a good mix of students, faculty/staff, and community people.”

Poetry Fest will include a door prize drawing and refreshments, described by Meilaender as “superb.”   Says Meilaender, “This is a chance for people to gather and enjoy listening to poetry together, having the experience of hearing poetry read aloud or sung.  It really goes right back to the roots of poetry in oral communication and the passing on of stories and emotions.”

Poetry Fest is free and the public is encouraged to attend and participate.  For more information, contact Meilaender at mmeilaender@albion.edu or (517) 629-0499.
