Money Raised to Aid in Relief Efforts to Date

$6,479
on campus

$4,742
in the Albion Public Schools

From President Mitchell
October 7, 2005

The response to victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by students, faculty, and staff at Albion College, along with individuals and groups from all segments of the greater Albion community, has been deeply gratifying. Whether through bakes sales, prayer services, benefit dinners, collections of food, clothing, and cleaning supplies, or planning for work trips to the affected Gulf of Mexico area, the demonstration of compassion and generosity on our campus and in our town has made me proud, once again, to be a Briton and to live in this special community.

Since Hurricane Katrina first struck, a campus coordinating group with student, staff, faculty, and community representation has met on a regular basis and will continue to do so well into 2006. This group has planned events, maintained and updated our special Hurricane Response web page, provided information on Albion resources for displaced persons, and has communicated with other groups at the local, state, and federal level who are engaged in helping victims of these terrible storms.

In the weeks ahead, we will continue to provide periodic updates to the campus community, particularly as regards work trips to the Gulf region that are being planned for Spring Break 2006 (March 11-18) by student organizations and by Pastor Dwayne Bagley of Albion First United Methodist Church. You should also feel free to contact members of the hurricane response coordinating committee (Shana Plasters, Daniel McQuown, Meagan Burton, Austin Gee, Rachel Lippert, Bobbie Cole, Trisha Hughes, Danielle Ruffin, Beth Lincoln, Morris Arvoy, Richard Craig, Canduace Cloy, Dwayne Bagley, and Tom Hunsdorfer) for additional information on hurricane response activities and plans.

My heartfelt thanks go to everyone who has responded with such concern and caring during this unprecedented tragedy for our nation.

Peter T. Mitchell
President
