Million Bequest from Hendley Estate is Largest
in Albion's History Gift Boosts Current Capital Campaign Total to $65 Million Posted September 25, 2001 ALBION, Mich. – Albion College President Peter T. Mitchell has announced the largest bequest in the college’s history—a $4.5 million gift from the estate of James and Virginia Hendley, boosting the College’s current capital campaign total to $65 million in gifts and pledges. The
Hendley gift will be used to support the
Albion College vision, “Liberal Arts at
Work,” by funding scholarships for
outstanding students in the college’s
institutes and academic departments.
The scholarships will be awarded
beginning in the fall of 2002.“Albion has been blessed with many benefactors, such as the Hendleys, who have believed in our mission and have given extraordinary support for our students and faculty and our educational programs,” Mitchell said. “The Hendleys’ gift amply demonstrates the impact individuals can make in the life of Albion College.” In addition, Mitchell announced the creation of the Hendley Challenge, earmarking $2 million of the bequest to provide matching funds that will encourage other donors to establish endowed scholarships. In the challenge, donations to create endowed scholarships will be matched by funds from the Hendley bequest. For example, a $10,000 donation will be matched by $10,000 from the Hendley bequest, resulting in a $20,000 endowed scholarship. Mitchell said the College hopes to have 200 new scholarships as a result of this challenge grant. “The success of Albion College always has rested not only in the quality of the education we offer, but also in the quality of our student body,” Mitchell said. “The Hendley Challenge will enable us to attract more students of a higher caliber as we accomplish our goal of becoming one of the finest liberal arts institutions in the country.” James Hendley was an attorney in Manchester, Mich., from the 1930s to the 1970s. He also served as president and chairman of Union Savings Bank in Manchester. Mr. Hendley was a member of the Washtenaw County Road Commission, the Washtenaw Estate Planning Council and state and local bar associations. He also was active in a number of civic and cultural organizations in the Manchester area. Virginia Hendley, who worked in her husband’s law office for 37 years, served on the Manchester Cemetery Board and the Washtenaw Historical Society board. She was a member of the Sharon United Methodist Church and a member of the Sara Browne Smith Alumnae group of the University of Michigan. The Hendleys were married for 58 years. They had been long-time friends of the College, frequently attending athletic and cultural events on campus. The Hendleys developed a strong and personal friendship with President Emeritus Melvin L. Vulgamore and his wife Nan. “The Hendleys were attracted to Albion because it was small and offered close attention for students,” explains Vulgamore. The Hendleys had previously established an endowed scholarship fund at the College. Albion launched its $120 million capital campaign—the largest in the College’s 166-year history—in April. The “Liberal Arts at Work” campaign will fund a wide variety of initiatives put forth in the College’s vision for the future, including the four groundbreaking Centers for Interdisciplinary Study, six preprofessional institutes, and the Foundation for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity. In addition, $32 million has been allocated for a new science complex, and $11 million is earmarked for the Albion Annual Fund, which will help underwrite scholarships and grants, faculty salaries and teaching materials, library acquisitions, and physical plant maintenance. At least $9 million will go toward endowed scholarships. Another goal of the campaign is to increase Albion’s endowment to $250 million.
