$4-million Ferguson gift will provide students state-of-the-art services

Posted Tuesday, October 26, 1999

ALBION, Mich. –Albion College’s desire to provide students with state-of-the-art services in an accessible, centralized location will be achieved through the generous support of Bill and Joyce Ferguson, who donated $4-million dollars today toward the construction of a new student, technology, and administrative services building.

This gift will fund approximately fifty percent of the overall construction costs of the building, to be named in honor of William C. Ferguson, ’52. The balance will be covered by private contributions being solicited as part of the College’s new Vision for enhancing liberal arts education. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2000.

The Ferguson Building will serve as a one-stop-shopping center for all student services. In addition to providing offices for the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs divisions, the building will also house new, multi-purpose computer laboratories providing 24-hour access to all College students and other administrative offices.

“The William C. Ferguson Building recognizes and celebrates the multiple and key roles Bill Ferguson has played at the College,” said Albion College president Dr. Peter T. Mitchell in recognizing Ferguson’s connection to the College as student, alumnus, parent, visiting professor, trustee, acting president, chairman of the board of trustees, and generous donor. Ferguson was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the College in 1996.

“Indeed, Bill and Joyce’s eclectic interests, including the new Vision emphasis on interdisciplinary study and technology, are all represented in the building that will bear the Ferguson name.”

Construction of the Ferguson building supports the implementation of the College’s Vision.

Revealed at Mitchell’s presidential inauguration in April 1998, the Vision combines innovative first-year and senior capstone experiences with stronger academic majors, minors and concentrations to provide students a dynamic learning environment.

Through the Vision, the College is also implementing a Foundation for Undergraduate Research, four Institutes for preprofessional preparation, and four Centers for Interdisciplinary Study producing collaborative projects between students and faculty, ultimately offering students the finest liberal arts education in the nation.
