Battle Creek Boychoir, Girls’ Chorus
and Ars Voce Visit for Albion College Strickler Concert Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 Reported by MJ McBride, ’09 ALBION, Mich. — Michigan’s beloved Battle Creek Boychoir, Battle Creek Girls Chorus and Ars Voce are all three coming to Albion to share their beautiful music as special guests of Albion College’s 2006 David L. Strickler Memorial Concert. The performance begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 5, in the College’s Goodrich Chapel. The Battle Creek Boychoir began in 1980 as an outgrowth of a church music program. Its repertoire emphasizes the great works of the sacred tradition, but also includes samplings from many other musical styles. Choir members, aged eight to 14 years old, represent many school districts in southwest Michigan and have sung throughout the Eastern United States and Canada. The Battle Creek Girls’ Chorus includes over 100 girls and young women, grades 3-12, divided into five different ensembles. They perform many concerts in Michigan, frequently in conjunction with the Battle Creek Boychoir and the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, the Boychoir and the Girls’ Chorus, along with the adult ensemble Ars Voce, made a tour of England, with performances at the Royal northern College of Music; The University Church, Oxford; The cathedrals of Winchester and Litchfield, and at the Shrewsbury International Music Festival. Ars Voce ("the vocal art") is a12-member a cappella group whose repertoire stretches from the early Renaissance to contemporary music. Ars Voce has sung to enthusiastic audiences across Michigan and at the Stratford Festival of Canada. The David L. Strickler Concert Series was established in 1992 by Albion College alumni and other friends of Dr. Strickler and of Albion College. The purpose of the series has been two-fold: to recognize Dr. Strickler’s long tenure (1943-76) as conductor of the Albion College Choir, and to bring distinguished choral ensembles to Albion College and the Albion community. This concert is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the Albion College Music department, 517-629-0481. Music Department Website Back to Campus News .
