50th Anniversary of Rosa Parks Arrest Commemorated Thursday at Albion College
Posted Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005

ALBION, Mich. —  The 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ aborted bus ride will be remembered in Albion with a community gathering on the Albion College Quadrangle Thursday, December 1, at 6 p.m.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give her seat to a white rider on a public transit bus. This event triggered the Montgomery bus boycott, arguably the landmark civil rights protest of the 20th century.

Albion’s event will include a brief statement on the importance of the anniversary, readings from civil rights leaders, a candle-lighting ceremony, and a blessing. Following the vigil, an informal gathering with refreshments will be held in the College’s Kellogg Center.

“We decided on the vigil as a way to recognize Rosa Parks and her life and legacy,” said Bobbie Cole, one of the student organizers of the vigil. “This will allow the campus to remember how important she is to all students and all people.”

This event is sponsored by Albion College’s’ Umbrella (consortium of diversity student groups), the Chaplain’s office and the office of Intercultural Affairs. For more information on the vigil, please contact Daniel McQuown, College Chaplain, at 517-629-0492 or dmcquown@albion.edu.
