‘Pirates of Penzance’ Sail Onto Goodrich Stage
Monday, March 27, 2006

Reported by Bre Dell, ’09

ALBION, Mich. — The dread “Pirates of Penzance” have commandeered Albion College for this Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8. The performances will take place in Goodrich Chapel at 8 p.m. each evening.

“Pirates” is the swashbuckling tale of Frederick (first-year student Alex Chatziapostolou), a pirate who decides to renounce his trade for the love of a respectable woman. His simple intention is complicated by the girl’s father and a pirate king, to a hilarious end.

“This project has been a bit different from the start,” stated director John King. “It has really been a joint project with the Briton Singers as well as the broader student body.” In addition, a live orchestra will accompany the singers.

Gilbert and Sullivan were the most popular team of writers for the musical stage in the late 1800s and early 1900s on both sides of the Atlantic. Many of the tunes from this show are popular with performers today, as is the Gilbert and Sullivan approach toward making fun of power and society at large. “They really started the whole public social satirizing and at times actually put themselves at risk,” noted King.

This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.  For more information, contact the Albion College Music department, 517-629-0481.
