Reported by Jake Weber

ALBION, Mich. — A professional jazz trio along with Albion College’s jazz ensemble and 80-voice concert choir join the Albion College Symphony Orchestra in presenting a world premiere orchestral work by Michigan composer Michael Zaporski. The special concert takes place Sunday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the College’s Goodrich Chapel.

“The Prophet” was originally composed by Zaporski under commission by the National Association of Negro Musicians, and is a work based on West African themes. ‘Zaporski has been an integral member of the Detroit jazz scene, since the 1970s, and with his trio FutureVisions, has recorded two critically-acclaimed CDs.

“This is a great experience for the orchestra, working with a composer and with these other musicians,” said Albion College Symphony Orchestra director James Ball. “This is an ambitious work and an exciting piece, definitely something different for the audience.”

Also on the concert are Smetana’s “The Moldau” and Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony.

This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.  For more information, contact the Albion College Music department, 517-629-0481.
