Global Issues are Focus of Third Annual Methodism & Race Symposium
Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006

Reported by Ben Evans, ’08

ALBION, Mich. – Albion’s Third Annual Methodism and Race Symposium promises an intriguing discussion on the role of race in today’s Methodist family. Scheduled for Saturday, February 11 at 6 p.m. in Lewis Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, (522 West Center Street, Albion), the Symposium will feature two keynote speakers and the opportunity for dialogue and exchange with members of the greater Albion Methodist community and members of Albion College.

Daniel McQuown, Albion College Chaplain, said that at its inception, “the first symposium was seen as a way to bring two churches and a College into closer collaboration. But those who attended realized the event had far greater implications. A space was created for honest dialogue about race and religion; the Albion community began to see this event as a place for healing and spiritual unity.”

Speaking Saturday night will be Oveta Fuller-Caldwell, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Adrian, Michigan and associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan. She will be joined by Neil Davis, pastor of United Faith Methodist Church and director of South Lansing Community Services, both based in Lansing.

The symposium will be held during the weekend of the State-Wide Retreat for college students, featuring United Methodist and African Methodist Episcopal student leaders from all over Michigan.

For more information, contact Daniel McQuown, Chaplain, Albion College, at (517) 629-0492 or dmcquown@albion.edu.
