‘Jazz and Conversation’ as Albion College Symposium Keynoter Lecture/Performance Free to Public in Celebration of College's Academic Life Monday, April 17, 2006 Reported by Jake Weber
ALBION, Mich. – “An Evening of Jazz and Conversation” with one of today’s most exciting musicians, violinist Regina Carter, caps two days of activities honoring Albion College’s academic life. Carter, with her Regina Carter quintet, provides the 2006 Joseph S. Calvaruso Keynote Address for the College’s Elkin R. Isaac Student Research Symposium. The lecture/demonstration takes place Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m. in the College’s Goodrich Chapel. Internationally acclaimed jazz violinist Carter has performed around the globe and played with musicians from Wynton Marsalis to Itzak Perlman to the Boston Pops. In 2001, Carter became the first jazz musician and first African American to play Nicolo Paganini’s famed violin, a national treature of Italy. The Detroit native has released six albums and earlier this month, performed an original commissioned work at New York City’s Lincoln Center.
Other Symposium Thursday events include: the annual Honors Convocation at 10:30 a.m. in Goodrich Chapel, and the Bruce A. Kresge Science Hall dedication will be that day. Albion College’s Elkin R. Isaac Student Research Symposium honors alumnus “Ike” Isaac, ’48, who served for 25 years at Albion as a coach, professor and athletic director. Isaac later taught and served as athletic director for the University of the Pacific. The Symposium, was established in 1991 by hundreds of Isaac’s former students and team members. The Isaac Research Symposium events, including Carter’s keynote, are free and open to the public, but tickets are required for the Carter lecture/concert. More information is also available at the Symposium Web page, . .
