Intercollegiate Band Comes to Albion College
Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006

Reported by Breanna M. Dell, ’08

ALBION, Mich. — Albion’s wind ensemble members join forces with the best college music students across the state, as the 34th annual Intercollegiate Honor Band performs in Albion on Saturday, Feb. 4. Michigan State University’s conductor of bands and professor of music John Whitwell will take the podium at 7 p.m. at Goodrich Chapel.

Along with the Albion players, musicians selected for the Honor Band come from Alma College, Calvin College, Cornerstone University, Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Hope College, Olivet College, and Spring Arbor University.

The program includes such favorites as Four Scottish Dances, composed by Malcolm Arnold, and Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide.” Bernstein’s overture was loosely based on a story by Voltaire and like the story, the music is fast-paced, energetic, and a bit satirical with an uplifting ending. This was done to make a statement in response to the complacency of post-war America.

Jenna Caponey, a Livonia junior who plays flute at Albion College, remarks, “Intercollegiate Honor Band is a wonderful experience. The accomplishment achieved from this hard work produces an amazing concert. It is an undertaking where those involved grow musically and personally.”

This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.  For more information, contact the Albion College Music department, 517-629-0481.
