Human Rights Debate Sponsored by
Albion College Students Monday, April 10, 2006 Reported by Jake Weber ALBION, Mich. — A simple-sounding question, but one that governments, families, individuals and institutions wrestle with every day: What, exactly, are human rights? Albion College’s Libertarian, Secular Humanist and Democrats student groups sponsor a debate on this topic with two noted philosophers on Tuesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in the College’s Bobbitt Auditorium. “We felt it was important to talk about human rights on campus,” said Peter Bornschein, Ann Arbor junior and president of the Albion College Libertarians. “One of the professors is a libertarian and one is a left-leaning liberal. Our goal is to generate more intellectual discussion on campus about such a major topic.” Jan Narveson, retired professor of philosophy from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, has written numerous books, including “The Libertarian Idea and Moral Matters.” James Sterba, professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, is the author of “Justice for Here and Now” and “The Triumph of Practice over Theory in Ethics.” Both scholars will discuss the general topic of human rights, answer questions from the audience, and debate one another’s ideas. This presentation is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Albion College Libertarians, Albion College Democrats and the Secular Humanists of Albion College. For more information, contact Bornschein at 517-629-1461 or pgb10@albion.edu. .
