Choreographer John Parks Shares
Vision of Albion College Dance Project Reported by Jake Weber ALBION, Mich. – Choreographer John Parks returns to Albion in collaboration with the Albion College Department of Theatre and Dance, to discuss “The Pearl Primus Project,” a 30-minute dance piece he is creating with the Albion College Dancers. Parks will share the story of this work in progress during a public presentation Tuesday, March 21, at 5 p.m. in the Herrick Theatre. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Parks, who teaches dance at the University of South Florida. Parks spent a year in Albion in the late 1980s, working both with College students at the Albion community. “He made many close friends in Albion,” said Missy Wyss, who directs Albion’s dance program. “I’m sure a lot of people will come to his talk just to talk to him – and he’s looking forward to seeing some old friends too.” "The Pearl Primus Project" is a collaboration between anthropology, dance, history, instrumental and vocal music, and theatre, and celebrates the life of Pearl Primus, a famous black dancer and anthropologist. Along with the interdisciplinary components, Parks’ dance celebrates the merging of African and modern dance styles. Albion College’s Student Dance Performance in April, 2006 will present the world premiere of the dance. Tickets are $3 for the general public, available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.
