Concerto Concert Showcases Albion’s
Standout Talents Monday, April 17, 2006 Reported by Bethany Corriveau, ’07 ALBION, Mich. — The Albion College Symphony Orchestra will present its final concert of the year on Sunday, April 30, at 4 p.m. in Goodrich Chapel. The concert features the winners of the annual Concerto Competition, who will perform their pieces with the orchestra. This year’s winners are Jenna Caponey with Night Soliloquy on flute, Dayna Cleland and Allison Gessner with an Albinoni oboe duet, and Ashley Larimer singing an excerpt from Menotti’s The Lady and the Thief. Each auditioned in February; a panel of guest judges selected the best from a large number of applicants. Winning this competition is quite prestigious and is usually very competitive. Along with the concerto winners, the orchestra will also perform three showcase pieces, including the William Tell Overture, more popularly known as the theme song from the television show The Lone Ranger. Featured as the opening to the piece is a cello quintet, with junior Leer Sobie as lead soloist. “This is going to be a pretty impressive concert, if I do say so myself,” says orchestra director James Ball. “Not only do we get a chance to show off the talent of the music department at large, we’re giving the public a taste of what our orchestra can do as an ensemble.” This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.
