West African Ensemble ‘Biakuye’
Appears at Albion College Monday, April 10, 2006 Reported by Breanna M. Dell, ’08 ALBION, Mich. — The sounds and beats of West African music are coming to Albion Thursday, April 20, at 8:30 p.m. in the College’s Goodrich Chapel. With the kalimba, ngoma, gyil, congas, and the bass, Biakuye engages audience participation while teaching about African culture and its impact on other around the world. “Biakuye,” or “unity” in the Akan language of Ghana, aptly describes the quartet, whose members originate from Waterford and Detroit, Michigan, the Congo, and Senegal. Member Titos Sompa has worked as a guest artist several times previously with the College’s dance program. Albion College’s music department coordinator, Mark Babb, stated “Biakuye brings a wide variety of global music to our campus, featuring different styles from Africa, the Caribbean, and American jazz. Biakuye presents a driving, energetic concert and we are excited to bring them to the Albion campus.” This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.
