Albion College Opens Observatory for Planet Viewing
Monday, February 27, 2006

Reported by Jake Weber

ALBION, Mich. – A historical telescope and the future of space exploration come together for the Albion community, as the Albion College Astronomy Club and Physics department offer an open house of Albion College’s telescopes on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 25. The March 3 viewing begins at 8 p.m.; on March 25 viewing hours will be 7:30-9 p.m.

Mars, Saturn, the Orion Nebula and other celestial objects can be viewed on Albion College’s historic Alvan Clark telescope. The Palenske Hall Observatory will be available for touring, with very limited use of telescopes. The Jackson Amateur Astronomy Club will also have telescopes available during the March 3 event.

“I’m excited we can offer this public viewing,” said Nicolle Zellner, the College’s new astronomy professor. “This is a great opportunity for the surrounding communities to come together to observe the night sky. It is also a great chance for the students here to share their knowledge with other interested people.”

The Clark telescope is located near the center of the Albion College Quadrangle. Palenske Hall is located on East Michigan Avenue, just east of Hannah Street. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly, and these events will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather. For more information, contact the Albion College Physics Department at 517/629-0361 or nzellner@albion.edu.
