Artists Bring ‘Luminance’ to Albion College Tuesday, January 23, 2006 Reported by Ben Evans, ’08 Albion, Mich. — This month, Albion College plays host to a joint exhibition featuring the works of two contemporary artists. Luminance, which features the artwork of Pi Benio and Jeffrey Cortland Jones, is an exercise in abstraction that pairs two disparate styles in a surprisingly effective dialogue between two and three-dimensional forms. The exhibit shows in Albion College’s Bobbit Visual Arts Building through through February 11.Pauleve “Pi” Benio’s use of simple materials (paper, wire, linen) lends a ghostly, hollow quality to her works. Pieces on exhibit range from cocoon-like sculptures that hang outwards from the walls to the surreal, tentacled capsule that greets the viewer at the gallery’s entrance. Light and shadow add to the eerily serene sensation of Benio’s pieces. Along the walls of the gallery are the works of Jeffrey Cortland Jones, whose “paintings” abandon traditional materials in favor of thicker mediums. Nearly all of Jones’ works utilize enamel and resin, applied liberally to create a glossy, almost tile-like effect. Jones seeks simplicity in his images by stressing individual aspects such as the “smokestains” that feature prominently in his works. The combination of these elements and the reduction of detail and increased attention to the rudiments of visual form allow Jones to, in his own words, “attain more contrast.” The exhibition is
