‘Voicing Our Visions’ Theme for
Albion College Women’s History Month 2006
Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 Reported by Jake Weber ALBION, Mich. – Examining a variety of historical and contemporary women and the ways the view their world, Albion College’s Anna Howard Shaw Women’s Center presents “Women and Representation: Voicing Our Visions,” its 2006 Women’s History Month theme. A variety of programs and activities, all open to the public, will explore the theme in educational and entertaining ways. Wednesday, March 1: Art exhibit Open House, celebrating the opening of special print exhibition featuring a number of contemporary and historical women artists. 4-6 p.m., Bobbitt Visual Arts Center Friday, March 3: Kate & Sarah with Lazy Sunday. The “pleasantly aggressive” folk duo Kate Peterson and Sarah Cleaver are joined by Lazy Sunday, a band of women whose use their passion for music to raise awareness of social issues. 9 p.m., the Coffee House (behind Baldwin Hall). Monday, March 6: Film: Killing Us Softly 3. Director Jean Kilbourne deconstructs advertising images, examining the explicit and implicit messages these images send about women, men, body image, self-esteem, and the treatment of women. Shaw Women’s Center director Kirsten Elling and program coordinator Staci Gunner lead a discussion following the film. 6-8 p.m., Olin 112. Tuesday, March 7: “Memory and Oblivion,” presentation by Marianetta Porter, University of Michigan art professor, detailing her work and its relationship to earlier African-American women artists. 4 p.m., International House Auditorium Wednesday, March 22: Tennis – not to play but to watch and support the women’s tennis team. 3 p.m., meet at the Kellogg Center to walk to the Dow Recreation Center outdoor courts. Thursday, March 23: Brit Knits invites potential members and the merely curious to knit and converse about the rich history of women and craft. 4-6 p.m., The Anna Howard Shaw Women’s Center (across Michigan from Wesley Hall). Tuesday, March 28: Film: The Hours. Nicole Kidman won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in this drama examining women and suicide. English professor Mary Collar leads a discussion following the film. 6-8 p.m., Olin 112. Wednesday, March 29: Daoud Lecture in Middle Eastern Studies: Micah Garen and Marie Helene Carleton, authors of "American Hostage: The Story of a Journalist Kidnapped in Iraq and the Remarkable Battle to Win His Freedom." 7 p.m., Bobbitt Auditorium. Thursday, March 30: Anna Howard Shaw Lecture: Marie Helene Carleton, co-author of “American Hostage.” Discusses “The Changing Face of the Middle East: How War, Politics, and Democratic Change Are Impacting the Role of Women in the Middle East.” 11 a.m. Bobbitt Auditorium. Thursday, March 30: Softball – not to play but to watch and support the softball team. 2:30 p.m., meet at the Kellogg Center to walk to Dempsey Field together. .
