David Abbott Performs Two 'Last
Sonatas' in Concert Monday, February 13, 2006 Reported by Ruthie Spalding, ’09 ALBION, Mich. — Albion College proudly presents faculty member David Abbott’s musical talents Friday February 24, at 7 p.m. in Goodrich Chapel. Abbott has been at Albion College as an associate professor of Piano since the fall of 2005. He will play two “Last sonatas,” or pieces of music meant to be the final thoughts of major works. The pieces in the concert are; Franz Joseph Haydn’s Sonata No. 62 in E-flat major, and Franz Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat major. Those who enjoy excitement will take pleasure in Haydn’s piece, which was written for a female pianist named Therese Jansen. Abbott said, “it is perhaps the most brilliant and virtuosic of the more than 50 piano sonatas he wrote.” In contrast, Abbott noted that the Schubert piece was composed close to his death and while he hurriedly trying to finish some other works, and has calm and soothing lines.. The complimentary sonatas provide a wide range which will appeal to all. This concert is free and the public is invited to attend.
