 A Great TWIST on Summer
Area Kids Enjoy Albion College Sports Programs

July 12, 2005

Albion College's popular summer youth programs, NYSP (sponsored by Albion College and the NCAA) and TWIST (an Albion College-created program) continue to support area kids ages 5-16 in some of the most important stuff they'll do all summer: play.  It's tons of fun, but not "just for fun," explains program director Tom Johnson.

Basic information about muscle groups and development are part of the TWIST program.

A cameraman from WWMT CBS from Kalamazoo catches a young batter's technique.  The TWIST story was featured during the first segment of WWMT's July 1 newscast.

"TWIST teaches kids lifelong sports skills while they are getting physically ready to learn for the classroom," says Johnson, a nationally-recognized expert on the link between children's physical and intellectual development.  "At the same time, they are learning the values of teamwork, cooperation, respect and compassion, in addition to understanding why having fun is important to their health and fitness."

TWIST and NYSP participations also get age-appropriate lessons on nutrition and basic physiology, trips to Albion's public library and children's museum, and lunch every day -- all for free, thanks to funding from the College and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
