Detroit Tigers Visit Albion College
Posted January 31, 2005

The business of baseball, from fielding grounders to running a multimillion-dollar enterprise, was the focus of a recent Albion College visit made by Detroit Tigers ballplayers and their coaches, general manager and CFO.

Students from Albion's Washington Gardner Middle School and Albion High School enjoyed the chance to learn more about the Tigers, via a lively question-and-answer session in the College's Herrick Theatre.  Tiger players also stressed the importance of education for all future careers, including professional sports.

Tigers players met with Albion College baseball and softball team members and coaching staffs, then later hosted an educational and Q&A session with Albion schoolchildren.  Later on, members of the College's Carl A.Gerstacker Institute for Professional Management had their turn at bat, with Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski and CFO Steve Quinn, '89.  The discussion covered challenges and careers in sports administration.

Several members of the Tigers team and coaching staff met with Albion's baseball and softball teams and coaches.

Albion College student Chris Terry, who completed a Gerstacker internship with the Tigers this past fall, helped organize the Tigers' visit and was pleased with its success.  "Everything went off very smoothly, and It was a great opportunity for the campus and community, to meet the team," says Terry, who plays infield on Albion's baseball team.  Terry notes that Dombrowski "was impressed with the depth of the questions that came from the Gerstacker students.  He really enjoyed his discussion with them; he said it was something that he doesn't get to talk about every day."
