Flanked by Sea Cadets, Morgan Bishop, '06, performs the National Anthem for a Town Hall meeting hosted by Vice President Dick Cheney in Battle Creek.  The crowd, Bishop noted, was somewhat more subdued than the usual 'Kresge Krazies' she sings for, but no less patriotic. Posted April 10, 2005

Morgan Bishop, ’06, was the in middle of a take-home final when the call came: would she like to sing the national anthem for a meeting with Vice President Dick Cheney in Battle Creek? “I was speechless,“ says Bishop. “I could barely get the word ‘yes’ out of my mouth.”

Along with her talent, Bishop’s school spirit that led to her being chosen to perform for Cheney’s March 24 town-hall meeting. A cheerleader and music major, Bishop frequently sings the national anthem for Albion home basketball games. Her basketball performances caught the ear of alumnus Joe Calvaruso, ‘78, a local Republican Party leader who organized Cheney’s visit.

The experience of singing the national anthem and “God Bless America” for Cheney, recalls Bishop, “was very professional. I went to a sound check the day before at Kellogg Arena, and everything was ready when I arrived for the performance.”

Despite passing through a security screening with the Secret Service, and facing a power suit-clad crowd, Bishop found that singing for the Republican pols was not completely different than singing for Albion fans. “When I sing the national anthem for basketball games, the ‘Kresge Krazies’ always join me for the last line,” she says. “I don’t know why, but that always makes me feel comfortable, when people sing along. When I sang for Cheney, I noticed a man standing near me began to sing too and that made me feel right at home. It was definately a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and will never forget.”
