Giovanni DiMatteo, ’06, Receives International Graduate Scholarship in Mathematics
April 20, 2006

Story by Jake Weber

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College senior Giovanni DiMatteo is the only U.S. citizen accepted for the entering 2006 Algebra, Geometry And Number Theory (ALGANT) program, supported by the European Union. The scholarship, worth nearly $52,000 over the next two years, will provide DiMatteo with graduate study, room and board at the University of Paris-Sud in France and the University of Padova, Italy.

“I am ecstatic to be accepted to this program,’ said DiMatteo. “The intensive nature of the program, its seminars, the deep local traditions in algebra and number theory, and diverse student body all have me in high spirits.”

“DiMatteo plans specifically to study Galois theory, representation theory, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry – but he is not solely focused on math. “My hope is to learn enough French that I can stay in Paris for my doctorate,' he noted.  "France is the haven for modern algebra.”

DiMatteo is a senior majoring in mathematics. He is the son of Michael DiMatteo of West Bloomfield and a graduate of Lapeer East High School.
