Institute Trip Studies Land/Sea Connection Posted Wednesday, May 28, 2003 The “environment” was of particular concern in more ways than one during the Environmental Institute’s fourth spring trip, to a raw and rainy Chesapeake Bay in mid-May.

"One goal of the trip was to show how heavy land use is endangering the Bay," says White. "In this respect, the contrast between the wild beach and dunes of Assateague and the complete sprawling resort development of Ocean City just to the north was an excellent fit with the trip theme ." "We talked about the "state of the Bay" in
class, but ... when we were out on the skipjack and Captain Dave talked
about the state of the Bay[that's when] it made complete sense!" recalls
student Amy Hupp. "On a scale from 1-100, with 100 representing the
state of the Bay when John Smith arrived, right now, the Bay [is around]
27. They are hoping to get it to 40 by the year 2010 and ultimately
70, by 2050." |
