EI Goes to Chesapeake Bay

Institute Trip Studies Land/Sea Connection

Posted Wednesday, May 28, 2003

The “environment” was of particular concern in more ways than one during the Environmental Institute’s fourth spring trip, to a raw and rainy Chesapeake Bay in mid-May.

Click here to preview upcoming improvements to Albion's science facilitiesAs on previous trips, the students studied natural ecology of the area, along with man-made structures and places that have been particularly affected by human activity.  The group visited a coal remediation site, which treats water polluted in the mines; toured the Potomac River and a nearby salt marsh; explored Chesapeake Bay from a skipjack oyster boat; observed land use practices in Lancaster County, Penn.; and toured the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, and Allegheny State Park, among the highlights of the 10-day excursion.

"One goal of the trip was to show how heavy land use is endangering the Bay," says White.  "In this respect, the contrast between the wild beach and dunes of Assateague and the complete sprawling resort development of Ocean City just to the north was an excellent fit with the trip theme."  Photo courtesy of Tim Lincoln

"We talked about the "state of the Bay" in class, but ... when we were out on the skipjack and Captain Dave talked about the state of the Bay[that's when] it made complete sense!" recalls student Amy Hupp.  "On a scale from 1-100, with 100 representing the state of the Bay when John Smith arrived, right now, the Bay [is around] 27.  They are hoping to get it to 40 by the year 2010 and ultimately 70, by 2050."
