Britons Give Solid Performance at IHSA Semi Finals (March 19-20, 2016)
Albion's pair of IHSA Regional champion western riders traveled to Black Hawk College in Galva, Illinois over the weekend of March 19 and 20 to pit their skills against the champions of other IHSA regions and try for a chance at the IHSA National Championship show.
In the Intermediate division, sophomore Jourdan Tonti (Livonia/Churchill) finished fifth in her horsemanship class, while classmate and teammate Taylor Sandberg (Spring Lake/Spring Lake) competed in Advanced horsemanship with an identical result.
Meanwhile, Albion's alumni division regional standout Katie Petchell '13 traveled to a separate Semi Final show at Middle Tennessee State University, where she finished fifth in Alumni Reining.
The Britons' post-season results came as Tonti and Sandberg received recognition from the IHSA for their achievements in the classroom as well; the sophomores were both named to the IHSA All-Academic teams for the 2015-2016 school year.
Sandberg, Tonti to Move on to Semi-Finals (February 14, 2016)
Eleven riders from the Albion College stock seat team competed as individuals at the IHSA regional championships on February 14 at the MSU Pavilion, and two alumni riders representing Albion joined them as well.
After some very stiff competition, team co-captain Taylor Sandberg (Spring Lake / Spring Lake) was named region champion in the advanced division, and sophomore Jourdan Tonti (Livonia / Livonia Churchill) won region champion in intermediate. Both riders will now move on to compete at the IHSA western semi-finals, which will be held in Moline, Ill. on March 19 and 20.
Albion alum Katie Petchell, '13 also swept her alumni reining division winning region champion. She will travel to compete at a separate IHSA western semi-finals location in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on March 19 and 20.
The results from the semi-finals competitions will determine if any Albion riders will go on to the IHSA national championships.
Six More Stock Seat Riders Qualify for Regionals (January 17, 2016)
The Albion stock seat riders returned from winter break a few days early in order to compete at the double header show hosted by Michigan State on January 17 at the MSU Pavilion. At the end of the day, six more team members had secured spots at regional championships, bringing the total stock seat riders qualified to an impressive eleven.
The morning show proved to be successful for many Albion riders. First place finishes included Danielle Townsend (Springport / Springport) in advanced and Brooke Viele (Midland / Herbert Henry Dow) in open horsemanship. Many points were also brought in from the second places awarded to Phillip Voglewede (Oxford, Ind. / Benton Central) in beginner, Tegan Barclay (Norton Shores / Muskegon Catholic Central) and Bekah Jefvert (Fowler, Ind. / Benton Central) in intermediate, and team co-captain Taylor Sandberg (Spring Lake / Spring Lake) in advanced. The team wound up in fourth place at the end of the morning show.
Viele had another strong showing in her reining class, bringing home first place in the afternoon show. Shannon Ervin (Ortonville / Brandon) and Elliot Brinker (Livonia / Adlai E. Stevenson) both won second in intermediate, and Barclay brought home another second in intermediate as well. By the end of the day, the Britons had another fourth place team finish.
Also worth a mention are two IHSA alumni competitors from Albion College, Katie Petchell and Megan McNeil. Both riders have qualified for regionals in both open horsemanship and reining, and they have a strong chance (50%) of moving on from there to semi-finals.
The IHSA regional stock seat championships will be February 14 at the MSU Pavilion.
