Job Description:

Albion College welcomes applications for the Groundskeeper I position in the Facilities Operations department.  Responsibilities include:

  • The caring for lawns and landscaped areas.
  • The collection, distribution, and disposal of debris and/or recycled materials.
  • The construction and maintenance of road and walkways.
  • Grade, seed, pack, and sod campus and athletic grounds areas.
  • Mow grass, weed, fertilize, and apply sprays to campus and athletic grounds areas.
  • Operate and make minor adjustments to mowers.
  • Operate manual transmission trucks, tractors, and related equipment used for maintenance
  • Clean and care for grounds keeping tools, equipment, materials, and supplies
  • The moving, loading, and unloading of supplies, equipment, and furniture.

  • Follows safety procedures; reports unsafe conditions and accidents in a timely manner; requests and uses safety equipment and personal protective equipment when needed; and participates in safety training.

Must have reliable transportation.   Hours are generally 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (1st shift) Monday - Friday. Time/days worked may vary to meet departmental needs.  Snow and ice removal of roads and sidewalks require early morning starts, extended hours, and weekend duty including Holidays.  Position is represented by the Teamsters. $15.29/hour.  Excellent benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years satisfactory commercial landscape maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to pursue  a Michigan Pesticide Applicators Certificate with categories 3A, 3B and 6; Certified Snow Plow Operator; and Albion College forklift operator’s license
  • Requires a valid motor vehicle operator's license and passing a driving record check.
  • Knowledge of lawn and landscape, cultural practices, such as, establishment, seeding, mowing, plants, pruning, transferring, cultivation, irrigation, diagnosis and treatment.
  • Computer literacy skills, able to check campus e-mail
  • Ability to read and follow MSDS recommendations and requirements
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and work with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odor, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, machinery, wetness, electrical current, weld flash, vehicle traffic and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is risk of injury.
  • The employee must be able to lift 10-25 lbs. numerous times each day and up to 100 lbs. a few times weekly.  Must be able to push and pull up to 150 lbs. occasionally.

Additional Requirements
May require Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with applicable endorsements and medical certificate in order to comply with State of Michigan requirements.
