To The Pleiad Editors:While I was more than happy to
comment for Andrew Kimball’s February 16 article ("Got Internet") on Albion’s
substandard internet service, I seem to remember The Pleiad running a
story about the same subject last school year. However, Kimball’s article
remains relevant, and more than a year later, Albion College is still choosing
to make excuses rather than solving the problem.
We don’t need a task force to study the problem. We don’t
need creative diversions from the problem. We need more bandwidth, period. You
can throw around excuses about being economically conscious, but the simple fact
is that without a major upgrade, we are not providing to students the services
that are expected at a reputable residential college. Our commitment to
technology on this campus has been beyond shameful, as our IT department
continues to not be given the resources required to make this campus
technologically viable.
And while it’s nice that the school is claiming that their
network is being shaped so that educational uses take priority, we as students
who are forced to live on campus as part of college policy have no other option
for non-academic internet usage. When something as simple as watching a Tigers
game or a missed episode of "Heroes" cannot be performed over the internet on
campus, we have no right to claim ourselves as technologically up-to-date. Yes,
the solution to this problem will be expensive, but we’ve been hearing excuses
for too long. One can only hope that the school will show the proper leadership
so that students will not have to read about this problem for a third
consecutive year.
