2006 Record: 10-17
Overall.
Key returnees:
Julie Ciezkowski, Howell senior- defensive specialist- captain.
Meghan Miller, Beverly senior- defensive specialist- captain.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
The saying "defense wins games and offense puts fans in the seats," does not apply for the Lady Brits.
"Our defense has always been strong; we lost a lot of games because of offense," said Melissa Walton, head volleyball coach.
Albion, who went 2-14 in the MIAA last season, is hoping to improve their record and their offense with their expanded roster. With only three returning starters, Emilee Goralski, Rochester sophomore; Erin Holdren, Portland senior; and Keri Slane, West Unity, Ohio junior, the rest of the 28-women-roster must earn their right to play.
"It’s really nice because everyone is fighting for a spot," Walton said.
Outlook:
There is no running clock in the game of volleyball, and there is no time limit when building a team.
"Our women know that rebuilding takes time," Walton said.
Still, the season looks promising for the Lady Brits, who have added two transfer students; Maggie Dusbiber, Chelsea sophomore, a 5’ 8" outside hitter and Morgan Watler, Novi sophomore, a 5’ 9" outside hitter to the team. Albion will also run a new formation this season.
"We are going to play a 6-2 set, which is new to us," Walton said.
In an effort to have the most blockers on the front row, Albion will have six hitters and two setters. With all the additions to the team, the Lady Brits are in it for the kill.
"We are gelling a lot quicker than last year’s team and it’s only the beginning of the season," Walton said.
Key games:
The 2007 season did not start easy for the Lady Brits. They faced Adrian and Hope in the first two games of league play.
"Adrian and Hope will be a really good test for us," Walton said.
In the first weekend of league play, Albion went 0-2, falling to Adrian and Hope. Miller led the team in digs and aces against Hope, posting 15 digs and three service aces.
The Bulldogs will test Albion again Oct. 18 at Adrian. The women in purple and gold will go on the road to play Hope Oct. 26. Meanwhile, the MIAA powerhouse, Calvin, who won the 2006 Conference title and are currently ranked 10th in the nation, will pay a visit to Kresge Gym Sept. 28.
